GCS English Linguistic Contest

Contest Overview

Objective

The English Linguistics Contest is designed to deepen students’ understanding and mastery of the English language. It focuses on the structure of words, sentences, and conversations, empowering participants to use language effectively and confidently in social and academic contexts.

Registration Details

  • Eligibility: Open to all students from Grade Pre-Level through Grade 10.
  • Registration Period: January 01, 2026 – March 05, 2026.
  • Contest Location: Conveniently administered at each participant’s own school.
  • Registration Fee: Rs. 1,000/- per participant, per contest.

Course Outline by Level

Sprout (Montessori, Playgroup, Nursery, KG)

Foundational skills: Letter recognition (A-Z, a-z), phonics, basic vocabulary (colors, shapes, animals), rhyming words, and fine motor skill development (pencil holding, tracing).

Explorer (Grades 1 & 2)

Core grammar: Articles, nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, singular/plural, punctuation, and basic tenses (present, past, future). Introduces alphabetical order, homophones, and literacy skills.

Challenger (Grades 3 & 4)

Building complexity: Possessive nouns, pronouns, prepositions, comparatives, sentence creation, compound words, prefixes/suffixes, and progressive tenses.

Contender (Grades 5 & 6)

Advanced grammar: Reflexive/relative pronouns, subject-verb agreement, sentence structure (simple, compound, complex), synonyms/antonyms, dictionary skills, and perfect tenses.

Competitor (Grades 7 & 8)

Refinement and analysis: Context clues, analogies, active/passive voice, author’s purpose and tone, verb tense consistency, and advanced punctuation.

Achiever (Grades 9 & 10)

Mastery and application: Critical peer review, evaluating claims and evidence, nuanced word meaning (shades of meaning), direct/indirect speech, quotations/dialogues, and all verb tenses (including perfect progressive).

Paper Pattern

The contest consists entirely of multiple-choice questions. For each question, participants must select the single best answer from four options.

  • Scoring: Each correct answer earns +5 points.
  • Negative Marking: Each incorrect answer incurs a deduction of -1 point.
